I'm searching for games or systems that can be used in a campaing inspired in American Gods. Maybe something narrative-driven, or even some game that is about the players being gods that have to survive or evolve with the passing of time, influence gained by their whorshippers and so on.

Is there something that can be useful for what i'm looking for?

A dragon has dropped a fat turd upon the village square. Your party is tasked with cleaning the square so the town festival can begin. The job must be finished before week's end, and the square must not smell poopy before the winter feast.

The king needs a powerful relic to heal his sickly daughter. Unfortunately, said relic is made of gold and now two dragons are deep in political strife to determine who gets it since it was right between their territories.

The party now not only has to get the relic, they have to sort this mess out with the dragons without pissing them off because despite being metallics they aren't above murdering small folk for fucking with their stuff.

I always wanted to be in a game where the party plays as bandits and burglars, not for a typical evil campaign where they work for a demon lord, collecting evil mcguffins or some shit, but cool stuff like pulling heists, train robberies and other awesome thieving stuff. Shit I'd love to design blueprints and seeing how the players plan their heists, or seeing how they manage to escape the law.

If only I had people interested in that sorta game.

You guys have stories relating to that in your current/previous games?

>> No.77192258

Isn't that basically Shadowrun? Only, well, more scifi.

>> No.77192274

Look up Blades in the Dark, from what I hear that's basically the big draw of the game.

>> No.77192344
Quoted By: >>77192368

The problem with that is that conceptually, bandits and burglars only really punch down because why risk angering lords when you can just steal old women purses. Heists against heavily fortified targets could be the highlight of a character's life, but if they do it multiple times chances are they'll be identified and stomped out.

>> No.77192368
Quoted By: >>77192390

Well, make it a one-shot then. These longterm questions shouldn't discourage you from atleast playing an adventure like this atleast once. If this discrepancy is too big for you, make new characters to play a similar one shot again. Or, better yet, make the hiding of your identity part of the game in a long-term-group. A character being revealed is then similar to a character death.

>> No.77192390

Well, it doesn't discourage me from playing something in that vein, but it's usually just another genre shifting to heist mode temporarily for an adventure or two. I think everyone that has been in this hobby for a while has been involved in multiple heists, it's just that they tend to be parts of a greater whole and setpieces.
Not that I would mind a ocean eleven one shot or something of the sort, all I mean is that this particular itch is usually scratched in other non-themed games.

Again, this belief that crime and monstrous behavior only occur in the ghetto is absolutely dent-headed. BTK. Gacy (as described). Dahmer. Sure there are the Nightstalkers and Aileen Wuornoses of the gutter, but that's just proving the point that evil isn't defined by zipcode and income bracket.

I think you guys are mixing up the different kinds of evil and also CN. Lawful Evil people (ignoring the fact that alignment in of itself is incredibly flawed) aren't going to break into your house to steal your possessions/murder your pets. Chaotic evil people definitely would and maybe even chaotic neutral. Not every evil person goes out of their way to cause as much suffering as possible all the time.

>> No.77192668

It's called subversion of the character, people expect X doing X things and players then decide to do the opposite, which is fine except in a new game they do it again and again in the next, and never end up doing X characters doing X things
as usual, talking to the players and have them agreeing to making X characters doing X things solves this problem

>I read books good
You spent years mastering the arcane through hard work and study, and now you can warp reality.
>My mom fucked a dragon good
Some ancestor - not necessarily a parent, because then you'd be a half-dragon - mixed blood with a dragon. Now you have some power from it that you've worked to master, and now you can blow away anything in your way with powerful destruction magic.
>I serve a God good
You worship a god and in return for your devotion and strict adherence to their will are rewarded with divine power. Now you can heal the wounded and cure the sick.
>I sold my soul good
You made a deal with a greater being in exchange for power, which has its own set of interesting narrative potentials.
>I punch good
You trained your soul to enhance your body through years of rigorous focus and introspection. You have mastered a mystical power known as Ki.
>I sneak good
The only one you're correct about, because anything a Rogue can do a Bard can do better.
>I am in tune with nature good
You have a special bond with nature itself, and are a guardian of the natural order. You can draw upon its power to change into wild beasts.
>I hunt animals good
More like "I don't do anything good" because Ranger is shit and doesn't need to exist.

Fighters have absolutely nothing that makes them special or unique. They have no inherently interesting things about them, just like Rogues and rangers. They exist for level 1 dips for proficiencies and nothing else. Paladins are inherently more interesting than fighters on every level, and if you're considering playing a FIghter play a Paladin instead. You give your GM more to work with, you have a more interesting character out of the gate because you have a code you work within which means you have to actually make tough choices, and unlike Fighters you actually get interesting and useful abilities so you'll have more fun mechanically.

>> No.77192441
Quoted By: >>77192453

More like there's no reason to play a fighter, rogue, or Ranger at all in D&D. They're the three most bland classes with the least interesting abilities mechanically, and you're better off with a Paladin or Cleric, Bard, or Druid respectively.

Ranger has a niche as "guy that does everything with his faithful animal companion", it's at least something and it can be pretty cool.

>humans can go anywhere and be accepted by everyone
your games need more racism if you feel humans get a free pass in other racial enclaves- that's the real hardcore privilege checking lefties want but can never handle. My dwarves and elves hate each other, but they tend to get along while shitting on humans (and orcs, obv); classic /tg/ trope. Gnomes? Ever had a door politely shut in your face? I'd invite you in, but the ceiling's a little low (the corridor you're standing in already has you stooping). Halflings are nice, but in that southern "ferreting out all your foibles" way, they also keep borrowing your things while you're part of the caravan and you typically find out when they hand it back after using it.

Before I sit my ass down and make my own system for this kind of shit, is there a system for running showa-era Godzilla style games where the monsters have some degree of character to them and players can make their own monsters? And not GURPS. If I'm going to bother with GURPS I might as well just make my own system. Looking for:
>Point-Buy character creation with a lot of options
>Ability to choose the "type" of monster you play (i.e. aquatic, land, winged, insect, reptile, stuff like that) and build around that
>Simple combat, preferably using dicepools
>Some sort of mechanic for military intervention as a sort of third facet to combat
>Not super crunchy

As I see it there are 3 roads for this
1: Critter setting where everythings an animal
2: OC species with similarities to both badgers and dwarves (what I did)

Honest question; why CAN'T something be derivative? For example in this thread, I like the idea of badger dwarves. Hell, Redwall cemented that image in my head 15-20 years ago (less dwarven, more of the crafting angle, point stands). But i will always love the "classic" dwarf. When I plan campaigns, I generally include them even when other "trope" races aren't there.

In my opinion, if someone can't enjoy something because its "cliché" then why the fuck would you do anything other than read the classics? There's nothing wrong with that, by the way, but you talk about needless restriction. Its like saying 70's-90's rock/metal isn't some of the best music because the stories the songs tell are derivative of the symphonies Mozart wrote, when in fact much of the best music of any generation rivals the music of the previous generations. Tolkien himself was derivative in many ways that have been mentioned a thousand times before, whether its the not-implied connection to Abrahamic myth, or the "trope" of the unexpected savior, or what have you.

I'm not saying stuff I create is worth reading or experiencing. But I feel like the occasional trope helps enhance my world because it is recognizable. Its one of those hundreds of little callbacks we base our lives around. For me, the Tolkienian dwarf is like my grilled cheese and tomato soup lunch, my extra shot of espresso, and my workout playlist.

New ideas are also just fine. You want badger dwarves? Go ahead. Hell, I might just be up for that game.Anything that is "X but add Y to it to seem different" is derivative. You want something unique? Unique is hard and is generally unrecognizable from something else from historical comparisons. Our cultural imagination is OLD. Thousands and thousands of years. Our oldest tropes hail back to the beginnings of civilization and even further. Vampires, Werebeasts, and Dragons are some of the oldest ideas in existence, dwarves among them.

So just let things be fun.

Inkarnate is by far the best tool for battlemaps, regional maos and world maps ive used. I can spend a shitton of time making a thematically inconsistent battle map in gimp and ps, hunting down vectors and pngs but inkarnate has it all for me and is easy to use. Pic related is my second map ever and it took me like 30 minutes. Players loved it. Tons of shit, good quality and streamlined.

Inkarnate with some custom assets. They are dropping 2.0 soon which adds more stuff and qol changes

This was my first which took me an hour because i needed to figure out controls.
25 or some dollaridoos a year is worth it for me because i host one shots every second week (which i write for new players), and got a campaign on the other. If you wanna do them dirty you could download every single asset to something gimp compatible and enjoy it for free forever but i'm too lazy to do that. The free version is good enough too, which ive used for a bit before.

Those are some great maps. I'm stealing them.

TL;DR - how do I deal with a female player who probably joined the game I'm DMing because she thinks it will get her laid?

Yes, it's opposite day. I've heard stories of females DMs who might have had male players only join the game because they want to creep on the DM or try to get a date with her. Now I seem to be in the same exact boat except the genders are swapped. I regard this woman as a nice friend and I'm happy to have her part of my game, but she's giving off all the signals that she's more interested in me than the actual game (otherwise I'm under the impression that RPGs aren't actually her thing - she's more into Magic). And no, before you say it: "Just give her the D" is absolutely out of the question, because reasons.

What if that's her fetish? It's a fairly common fetish among women.

The original problem was that she doesn't seem interested in the game. It can only help, one way or the other.

>Talk to her. Tell her your suspicions and why you have them, and openly and gently let her know that you're not interested like that. Or get an anon from /tg/ to pass her a note in lunch.
lol, talking sincerely to women is the worst thing you could ever do, that will only make her be offended or worse
just say you just got a gf, shell be ofended for a week or 2, will go fuck with some rando and then go back to the game if she is still interested on it at least a bit or completly leave

The Lucrehulk follows a very different design language to the rest of the CIS fleet, which I'd probably say are some of the most complex ships in the franchise in terms of style. More of the sleek industrial Hoersch-Kessel ships would've been nice, especially on oft ignored lower end of the CIS fleet.

Pretty bold of White Wolf to make being Gay a derangement, just proving once again that their games are truly a reflection of the real world.

Ettins have two discrete minds, a continuous party would be multiple personalities that have all merged into one.

I've read a story in the 1950s SF magazine Galaxy featuring a telepathic fetus. Initially it uses telepathy to get the mother to do what it wants, but eventually starts planning on using its power to mind-control people and take over the world once born. Fortunately it turns out that exposure to oxygen neutralizes telepathic powers, so it loses the ability upon birth and just becomes a normal baby.
IIRC Goblin Punch also had a concept with a civilization that values youth to the point of stopping their aging as soon as possible. The most revered among them are those who've managed to prevent themselves from being born at all, permanently remaining in a fetal state and mind-controlling their mother to interact with the rest of the world.

I want to run a game for my players set in post-apocalyptic America, where society has progressed to a medieval era. I CAN tweak 5e to work for this, but I’d like to try not playing DnD.

What’s a good, actually fun, low-magic system?

Because it's a generic universal system. It can be adapted to run games in a wide variety of settings with ease and has a very large amount of supplements.
