V2 made a few efforts to streamline the clunkier aspects of the game but left it with a few rough patches. Off the top of my head:

The core rules are still fantastic, but there are some serious edge cases that just break down. A lot of players are very salty because there was a fan-developed Mk2 that was worked on but dropped in favour of the TTC version.

My big problem with GW codex fluff is that you can swap the names of the unit and weapon with their counterparts from any other codex and it'll generally read the same. The little details for in for authenticity is what makes it. GW proper just can't compare because what the goal is is for models to be sold. That is the primary motivator. Anything else is just extra and isn't even necessary

Maybe I'm naive but it seemed like the goal of the IA books was to tell a story and expand on some deeper things in the universe. I know FW explicitly made stuff to sell but, as I mentioned above, it seems like they weren't just ticking boxes for what was needed. Like Bedford and Phil went, "oi you know what would be brilliant? WW1 imitations! Warwick, get writing!" Models were made by people who actually gave a damn and enjoyed it.

A DM's only valid reason for denying flying characters is if a major challenge that the campaign is predicated on can be easily circumvented by allowing a single person to fly.
Very few campaigns live or die on such challenges, and therefore if your DM gives you some cockamamie "hur dur flying speed at level 1" bullshit then he needs to pull his head out of his ass.

What most DM's mean when they say "I dont allow flying characters" is actually "I don't wanna put up with the stupid bullshit a flying character can decide to do." which is fair.

You shouldn't play D&D or make your own homebrew D&D.

All homebrew games I've played, being a mage in heavy armor was a thing.

I've seen plenty of settings that use the "magic does fucky things around metal" explanation.

>mage gets heatstroke

But if the equipment incompatibility isn't baked right into the magic system, well I don't see any reason not to. And even if it is, there's no reason wizards can't wear heavy armor that gets around the issue via abnormal construction techniques and materials. Bit more expensive and harder to replace, but it's still a good idea.

Did you guys ever read any of the old books? They were pretty bad, and most of the characters were dull as fuck. It was mostly just Urza that was compelling, with occasional interesting minor characters like Volrath and Belbe that rotated in and out of the story. I'll try to get ahold of a copy and read through it. Rules-light for out of combat stuff is fine, I can work with that and make calls for rp rules as long as there is enough room for the players to grow. I wonder how well it mixes BT combat with the rp skills, say if you have to get out of your mech to hack a door or something like that, while your friends are continuing the battle for a couple of turns.

There's rules for converting the RPG gunnery and piloting (which works like it does in AToW, where big numbers are good) to BT stats and back, including how to apply xp gained in BT game to the RPG skills (it's somewhat more complicated if you intent to convert back and forth, as the RPG uses a combination of the character's attributes and skill rating when making rolls, which when converted to BT would be combined to get the gunnery and piloting skill values).
