In the past (and technically still do) they were extremely parasitic middlemen that handled the business side of things in exchange for pretty much everything except the code itself (most notably the IP). Nowadays publishers are just companies that buy IPs and studios with their huge legacy rolls of cash and milk the fuck out of them while actual non-publisher game-developing companies just release on Steam.

I'm an idiot. I saw a peach/skintone at the bottom of the cape and thought it was the hands. My fault entirely.

I'm much happier with where the waist is now for the character on the right. You could bring it up by 1 pixel, but I dont see a need to unless you prefer it.
I think the left one is still too low, hes all torso. It looks like his legs start where the tunic ends so he has very short thighs, and long shins. Also, the knee is a bony area, maybe make it a 2x2 box if you're planning on doing a 1 pixel width shin. (You dont have to, this is just an idea, go with your gut and what you like.) That way you have a nicer transition and an easy point to bend.

Yes, higher contrast. So light vs dark, desaturated vs high saturation, warm vs cool even pattern vs flat. How rich is this character? Maybe he can afford an embroidered robe or has his family crest on it and you can add a tertiary color to it. And on the right character, you may want to break up the bottom of the cape so it isnt a perfect horizontal line. You could make it an arc, or make it jagged like its worn and torn.

Yeah I get it. I pick random colors too to make myself happy but it does really help bring cohesion and is a great rule. Be proud of yourself. I'm looking forward to seeing more.

The graphical fidelity of the game hasn't been the important thing to change over the past 5 years. The everything else is what has improved in leaps and bounds. More assets, more poses, we can now save mod data to cards, every card can have unique mod assets attached to it, the game can be compressed... it's a whole new world.
